FINAL DETAILS!
As we discuss on the Focus Page for Week 15, three learning tools were
introduced in Week 1 to guide your studies throughout the semester. These
were to result in: (1) Compiled Vocabulary, (2) Timeline of events
important to Native Americans, and (3) Annotated Base Map.
Since the map and possibly the timeline are not Word files, you have two
options for submittal: You can either create pdf files and email them to us
- sally.thompson@umontana.edu and eschupman@yahoo.com - or you can mail the
results to me as follows:
Dr. Sally Thompson
Director, Regional Learning Project
Center for Continuing Education
The University of Montana
Missoula, MT 59812
We look forward to seeing the results and hearing from you about how useful (or not) these tools have been.
Look for an email about second semester from Dr. Lisa Blank from the School of Education.
Happy Holidays to you all!
Sally

Greetings,
Ed and I have both been in Seattle this past week for the National Indian Education Association conference. It was a great opportunity to share with others what we¹ve been doing as well as to see what¹s going on in Indian Education around the country. Montana is really setting some impressive standards!
In the next few days, each district will be receiving one copy of Dottie Susag¹s book, Roots and Branches. Please share this with your team and then make sure it lands in a school library. It¹s a great resource for all of you and particularly for Language Arts/English teachers.
Since the Blackfeet Tribe¹s official website is under construction, you can find lots of great information about history and contemporary life at: http://www.trailtribes.org/greatfalls/home.htm
Finally, if you are one of our more active participants and you notice the absence of some of your colleagues, please take a moment to check in with them. Maybe they need a little encouragement to keep up with this sometimes challenging material!
Thanks,
Sally

For those of you interested in learning how the basis for IEFA found its way into the Montana Constitution, we've added an interview to the Week 1 Course Content. I hope you'll find the time to listen to this fascinating story. It's a great example of how individuals make a difference! Let me know if you have any questions about this addition.
Best,
Sally

Greetings Everyone,
Your postings on the Discussion Board are inspiring! I am so pleased to see the depth of your thoughtful responses. This course truly is a life-changing process and your engagement will have positive effects throughout your districts. Washington State has posted some great material for free downloading, organized by reading level. I imagine you can put these to good use! You can find the "Indian Reading Series: Stories and Legends of the Northwest" at

Kind regards,
Sally

Hi everyone. It’s good to have you all online for the course now. We are now beginning our deep explorations of American Indian content tied to the Essential Understandings which will continue to the end of the semester. These materials can offer rich new insights to educators and I hope you will enjoy them. Online learning works best when there is dialogue among the participants and we strongly encourage you to get involved in this aspect of the course, if you have not already done so. Per the syllabus, a portion of your grade is based on your participation in online discussions with me and each other through the Discussion Board. Don’t forget to update your vocabulary lists and maps weekly. Be sure to let us know if you have any questions about the materials or are experiencing any technical problems. Looking forward to a productive fall!
Your IEFA colleague Marcia Beaumont, from the 2007-08 Billings Team, received the award for Indian Educator of the Year, K-8, at the MIEA conference in Missoula in April (2008). Congratulations to Marcia on this well-deserved honor!
